1. MOVE

In my mind, the single biggest reason that people have pain and health problems is because they don’t move often enough. Simply stated we are made to move. Our bodes are built to be moving at least 10 hours a day.

Unfortunately, most youths (and adults) spend 5.5 hours per day (on average and not including time spent sleeping) seated or lying down. The ramifications of this statistic include postural deficits, pain, gastrointestinal problems, respiratory problems, blood pressure changes etc etc.

Static and stagnant is not how we should live our lives. I’m not saying that you need to be in the gym for hours each day. Simply going for a walk or doing some outdoor work regularly will help you feel better.

2. DRINK WATER EVERYDAY

This is a biggie. We just do not drink enough water every day. Too often people turn to sugary sports drinks and soft drinks when they are thirsty. While this might provide you with the illusion that your thirst has been quenched, you aren’t rehydrating.

Proper hydration will ensure that your bodies homeostatic mechanisms work efficiently which helps prevent disease and keeps you ticking over nicely. Try to drink at least 1.5L of pure unflavored water per day.

Did you know that your kidneys filter about 200L of water everyday? Why not give them some clean water to work with daily and you’ll be amazed how much better you will feel.

3. RESTRICT THE AMOUNT OF SUGAR IN YOUR DIET

Unfortunately about 90% of the food we eat these days is FULL of sugar. Anything that is packaged or processed has had sugar added to it in some form or another. High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) is used to add flavour to everything, from the Coca Cola you drank today to the Chinese takeaway you ate last night.

Excess sugar in the body causes bad things to happen, but high amounts of HFCS causes very nasty things to happen. It has been proven to cause all sorts of problems like diabetes, Gastro Intestinal problems, cardio-vascular disease etc.

And you would be surprised at the amount of foods that contain HFCS, everything from Yoplait Yoghurt to salad dressings to Special K breakfast cereal to white bread to fast food. I could go on, but you can probably see, HFCS is in almost everything.

Cut the amount of sugar from your diet and your body will function better.

4. EAT MORE VEGETABLES

This is a follow-on from number 3. We simply do not eat enough vegetables and we also don’t eat a big enough variety of vegetables. Taking a portion less of potatoes or chips and adding an extra portion of vegetables provides the body with much needed nutrients and minerals as well as providing plenty of dietary fire and roughage to help maintain a properly functioning digestive system.

Im not saying that everybody should just drop everything and become a strict follower of the Paleo diet but the Paleo approach definitely has some very very beneficial aspects to it. Adding lots of green vegetables like broccoli or spinach to your plate will help balance your diet and will make you feel better.

5. GET OUTSIDE REGULARLY

Todays society is increasingly built upon social media, computers and television. That isn’t a bad thing in some ways but in others it most definitely is. People are spending less and less time outside as a result.

The time spent breathing good old fashioned fresh air and the time spent (unprotected – wearing no sun screen) in the sunshine is decreasing. We aren’t getting enough good quality oxygen and we sure as hell aren’t getting enough Vitamin D.

Our bodies manufacture VitD upon exposure to sunlight and it is vital for a healthy immune system and for calcium regulation in our bodies. Getting outside more often will help you feel better.
