Tanning Tips

I saw the sun today!! WHOOOOP!! Seriously, it peeked out long enough to give me a teeny tiny boost of Vitamin D!! YES, yes ok I realise the picture is more ‘sunny spain’ than ‘Mild Friday in West Clare’ – and the sunshine has since been replaced by misty fog – but it’s called ‘optimism’ people!.

It was just enough to get me excited about Spring and raise my adrenaline levels (a little bit – not quite enough to get me back on my daily walk … baby steps folks, baby steps). So anyway, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to mention bringing out those legs and baring those arms and throwing a bit of a sun kissed tan on them. Here are some fabulous tanning tips from Industry expert Karen Brown of KARORA tan. Also you can read this article for more info.

If you shave your legs, try to do so a day before applying tan. This way our skin won’t be too sensitised and reactive to the tanning formulation or will you have to shave on top of a fresh fake tan, which would exfoliate way some of your hard work.

No matter which fake tan you use, it’s only as good as the canvas you work from. To prep your skin for a perfect tan, hit the shower with an exfoliant and some elbow grease. “I generally like body scrubs made by fake tan companies,” says tanning expert Karen Brown, from KARORA. “They tend to be stronger and best for removing all the dead skin cells that get in the way of an even tan application.” Try KARORA smooth operator Micro-Peel(14.99). Avoid oil-based scrubs, adds Brown “The oil can act as a barrier against the tan adhering to skin” she explains.

Only lightly moisturise the hands, feet, elbows, knees and any dry areas on the body.  Most  moisturisers tend to act as barriers and don’t allow the DHA in self tans to develop properly.  With the KARORA botanical bronzing range (€14.99-24.99) it is not necessary to moisturise as it already contains one of nature’s super natural moisturisers – argan oil – which is rapidly absorbed into the skin.

Wear a mitt or latex gloves when applying tan, it reduces the margin for error and ensures you don’t stain your hands.  Map out the body in stages so you don’t miss bits.  Slowly work from the top of the body down to your feet. For hands and face pre-mix your product with a bit of moisturiser to thin out the product for a lighter application.  To achieve a light tan wash product off after 4-5 hours or 8-10 hours for a richer colour.

For optimum results apply your tan the evening before your party and wear dark loose clothing after you have finished.  Moisturise your tan daily to lock in hydration and help your tan to fade naturally.  After bathing pat skin dry with your towel as vigorous drying will scrub off the tan.

If all of the above advice sounds too much like hard work, you’ll be happy to know there is an effective – and easy – alternative – gradual self tan. Think the love child of a fake tan and a body cream. Because this type of formulation features less DHA than traditional tans – not to mention more moisturising agents – it is less likely to streak. This means you can just slather it on – no prep work required – and find yourself with a gorgeous sun-kissed glow within hours.
